Steven Bové is a Connecticut based comics creator and designer who became quickly disillusioned with the balance of forces in mainstream comics publishing and decided he'd do things his way. He works today as an art director for mass media productions, publishes independently created web comics at UComics.com, teaches regularly at The Comic Cartoonist's Workshop and has compiled this course into an extensive workbook due for release later this year from his independent BovéWorks enterprise.
The workbook is an ambitious undertaking that chronicles the artist's learning processes and teaching methods in a smooth and well organized presentation. Accompanied with photographs and illustrations throughout, it covers everything from the creator at the center of the art form to every station of the comics making craft along the way. From basic drawing skills and techniques to advanced layout and design, writing fundamentals, storytelling, pacing, inking, lettering, coloring, and printing - including a glossary of pre-press and printing terms that come in handy for any artist wanting to see their work to the finish. An additional chapter of odds and ends covers character development, costume design, work tools, self-publishing, movie and music franchising - and much more.
The material is put forth with the expertise of a teacher who knows how to teach. Through the filter of Steven's own learning process and teaching experience, young aspiring creators can now have a fresh and personal look at the rich reservoir gained from the artist's struggle on the road to independence.
The Comic Cartoonist's Workbook is an exemplary expression of one comic book creator's confidence in his creative ability, sacrifice and generous gift of accumulated insight. The course Steven Bové chose at the onset of his career is about to give the comics community a worthy first-fruit of conceptual and technical methods from first hand creative experience.
Look for it soon at BovéWorks.
