If concern over a loved one's health is indication of being regarded by their friends, peers and community, then Marie Severin, first lady of the comics, is surely of the most loved that the industry has known. News of her suffering a stroke last Thursday, and being hospitalized, is spreading and get well wishes and prayers are rippling through the comics web.

I knew of Marie's work for Marvel, first through the charming art she did for the funny satire series NOT BRAND ECCH. I however soon discovered the pivotal role she filled at Marvel, as an artist and colorist, contending along side the publisher's greatest legends. When I began working in comics and frequenting the Marvel bullpen, I came to know, first hand, one of the more cheery, witty and warmer personalities that the comics industry could boast of. Her presence there was very timely for the young, estranged, and withdrawn Detroiter that I was. Her worry-free motherly demeanor did wonders to help make me feel at home, at a time when I sorely needed such warmth and familiarity.
Clifford Meth has collected a few get well wishes for Marie at Silver Bullet Comic Books. Paty Cockrum, Johnny Romita, Gene Colan, Herb Trimpe, Stan Lee, Roy Thomas and Harlan Ellison, along with Clifford, all paint a vibrant image of why Marie Severin is so loved. Not only for her fabulous talent as a comics artist and creator, but also for the warm sense of humor and good cheer that she so casually, and with much humility, infected everyone around her with.
In a telephone conversation from the hospital, she told Clifford to stop worrying because she'll be home soon. We're taking Marie at her word because such love as she has bestowed upon us, and such as is being expressed for her, from every nook and crevice of the comics industry... well, we know that such a force does have the power to heal, uplift and bring Marie Severin back home again.
You are an exceptionally loved soul, our dear first lady. Come home soon!
